The fifth and final midnight walk through Amersham in aid of Iain Rennie Hospice at Home (IRHH) on 18th June will offer two routes through the new and old town and surrounding areas.
Walkers will have the choice of a 10-mile route or a 5-mile option. Both routes start and finish at the Polish Club on Raans Road and head out along Woodside Road, then through the town centre out towards Chesham, before taking in the old town and heading up hill back towards Raans Road – where 5-mile walkers peel off for tea, medals and bacon butties at the Polish Club! Meanwhile 10-mile walkers continue along White Lion Road out to Little Chalfont, turning at the Beacon School to rejoin the route back.
Event organisers opted for two routes following feedback from last year’s 8-mile challenge. IRHH Community Fundraising Manager Ruth Barber said: "Walkers from our 2010 Goodnight Walk said they had a great time and loved the party atmosphere, but some felt 8 miles wasn’t enough of a challenge whilst others felt it was a bit far for them. By offering two routes, we hope we can appeal to people of varying ages and fitness levels, while ensuring they can feel confident asking for sponsorship."
The annual Goodnight Walk already attracts a range of participants, including former patients who have completed successful cancer treatments, teams walking in memory of friends or family members and a number of ‘hens’ choosing to host their special pre-nuptial celebrations in a novel way raising money for charity.
Last year, walkers got into the carnival spirit with mardi gras themed fancy dress and the ‘longest conga in the Chilterns’. In readiness for the 2011 event on 18th June, IRHH is getting into the 70s groove with psychedelic flares and jumpsuits galore, courtesy of local business Fancy Dress 2 Impress, who are supporting the Goodnight Walk. Over the past four years the Goodnight Walk has raised over £300,000 for the charity and this year’s target is £75,000. Every walker is being asked to aim to raise £150 which funds an Iain Rennie nurse for 24 hours.
