Sarah steps out in the dark to raise money for local charity

Sarah Lumb will be forgoing a valuable night’s sleep and stepping out on a 10 mile walk at midnight on Saturday 18 June when she takes part in the 5th Goodnight Walk organised by local charity Iain Rennie Hospice at Home (IRHH – part of the newly merged charity Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care). Rather than settling down in her comfortable bed at home in Chalfont St Giles, Sarah will be pounding the streets of Amersham to raise money to help fund the home nursing service offered by IRHH to those patients in the local area diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses.

This will be the second time that 28 year old Sarah has taken part in the IRHH Goodnight Walk but this time it will have a special significance as she will be walking in memory of her Nan, Maureen Laws, who passed away in September after being cared for by Iain Rennie nurses. Sarah says:

"The care my Nan received was outstanding and it was a great comfort to her and to the whole family to be able to spend her last weeks at home. I have to confess that I don’t take part in the Goodnight Walk for enjoyment, but I have seen first-hand what a wonderful job the charity does and I want to do everything I can to help them."

Sarah has also encouraged her mum, 45 year old Lesley Lumb from Amersham, to join the walk this year and she is looking forward to having some company along the way.

"Last year, even though there were hundreds of others walking, I did feel a little bit lonely and I’m so pleased that Mum will be walking with me this year. It’s a lovely and really worthwhile thing for both of us to do in memory of Nan."

Sarah is also determined to go into this year’s walk a little more prepared:

"I only did a 3 mile practice walk last year and it really wasn’t enough. This year Mum and I will be building up our mileage in advance of the night. It’s more of a challenge than you think to walk when your body really wants to be asleep. I know we will be immensely proud of ourselves when we get to the finish line and the knowledge that other families will benefit from our efforts will truly make it a memorable night."

Why not join Sarah and Lesley and enter the 2011 Goodnight Walk? A 5 mile and a 10 mile route are available both of which start and finish at the Amersham Polish Club in Raans Road. Both walks start at midnight and entry costs £15 which includes a t-shirt, refreshments along the way and a reviving cuppa and bacon butty on the finish line.
